Active Listening (6/14/2018)

POP QUIZ: You're talking to a friend- what is the most important part of the exchange?

A. Talking loud enough for them to hear.

B. Speaking clearly so they understand.

C. Choosing the best words to get your point across.

D. None of the above.

The correct answer is D. Why? Because no matter how well you convey your message, if they aren't listening, the message won't be received, and the communication will fail.

Being an excellent listener is arguably a more important skill than being a great speaker. Despite there being a heavy focus in schools on group work and presentations, none of the focus is put on the audience. This is because it is assumed that we know how to listen, or that we can't actively improve as listeners. This assumption is incorrect, and to guide improvement in this area there is a link below to check out a web page from "Skills You Need" that will share some of the practices of Active Listeners that allow them to hear what the other person is really saying.
